If you’ve ever dreamed of attending a fashion show then you’re in the right place.
It can be easier than you think to get a ticket to one of these coveted shows… If you know what you’re doing…
And if you don’t have any experience in this area not to worry… You can follow the advice of someone who knows what she’s doing;)
I used to dream of going to a Parisian runway show and I never thought it would be possible. Then 5 years ago I found myself sitting front row in a haute-couture fashion show in Paris France!
Now I’m a fashion designer myself and hold my own runway shows in Paris…
I’ve been to my fare share of shows and I’m going to share a process with you to be front row in an upcoming show!
It may feel unlikely right now… Just keep reading and follow this 3-step process and improve your chances to attending an upcoming fashion show!
First let’s get something straight.
You’re drawn to fashion. Don’t judge yourself.
People all over the world invest their time and money to go see beautiful art.
So in case you judge yourself for your love of fashion (art) you can let that go right now:)
Fashion has been admired for centuries by all walks of people. From royalty to celebrities to everyday people who have a taste for fashion.
You’re in good company!
Today the most sought after way to actually be a part of fashion and view this art form is to be live and in-person… to witness the newest… hottest trends and styles… unveiled right before your eyes at a fashion show.
It’s THE WAY for a fashion lover like you to get a behind the scenes look at the styles before they are unveiled to the rest of the world in magazines and on television…
Being in person at a fashion show is something very few women get to experience yet it's on the bucket list for millions across the world.
A select few have figured out how to get the coveted invites and be a part of the dream.
But there's a problem!
Actually, there are several. First of all getting into fashion shows requires you to take some action.
Designers don’t just sit around looking for people to fill their shows.
There are more people wanting to go than there are tickets…
You can’t sit back and wait for the Magical Fashion Show Stork to deliver your invitation.
You have to educate yourself to bring new exciting experiences like attending a fashion show into your life.
You have to invest a little time and put some effort in to get the results you desire. It’s like anything in life.
The good news is reading this article counts as some of the effort required.
So Bravo to you for investing your time and putting in the effort!
Now the next thing to recognize is there is some monetary investment to get a ticket to a fashion show. Between travel and the ticket itself, it can cost some decent money.
BUT the problem isn't in the cost…
You want to make a good decision. After all it’s your time and money we are talking about. So let’s dive right in and give you the 3-step process to getting into your first fashion show…
Type of fashion show? Isn’t there just 1 type with the models walking down the runway?
Fashion shows can be categorized in a number of ways. By season... or ready to wear or couture... but the truth is there is another deeper level of fashion shows that's almost never discussed.
Is it a Normal Runway Show? Trunk Show? Cocktail Show? Or a Dinner Party Fashion Show? The 4 types are easy to distinguish. But…
Warning… From the “show” perspective these are not as fun as the upcoming shows.
This is the most basic of fashion shows. They often take place in a small setting for a few people.
Trunk shows are like a borderline home party where you get to touch and feel the clothing. It’s a way for a designer to affordably present their line.
The purpose of the show is to showcase and sell clothing. So the guests who attend are typically buyers for stores and boutiques… Occasionally previous high-value consumer clients are invited as well.
These shows are not always easy to find out about as they typically only invite a few buyers to them.
From the perspective of going to a “show” these are not as fun as the upcoming types of shows. They have fewer models, less glam… and less atmosphere.
You'll sit in a row. No food or drinks.
You'll be placed in your seat 15-20 minutes prior to the show starting. Hoping someone nice gets put next to you.
The actual show will typically last 10-20 minutes. And when it's over the music will stop and the guests all leave.
This is the most common type of fashion show.
They can be exhilarating. They can also feel too short and you'll often be wishing it wasn't over.
During these shows, it's almost impossible to speak to the designer.
It's like going to a movie. Once the show is over everyone leaves.
It’s actually an area for improvement for the fashion business. In my opinion the designers are missing out on the opportunity to have their “art lovers” mingle and feel and touch the brand.
Something else that’s odd during the normal runway show is you only see the clothes on the catwalk. And you don’t have the opportunity to see them after the show. When it’s done… it’s done.
For me this offers another area for improvement. After all if you’re attending a fashion show you’re a fashion lover.
Being able to view the clothing after the show makes a lot of sense. It adds to the experience of the attendees.
Sadly this almost never happens at a Normal Fashion Show.
This is where you'll be standing. Drinks are served. Music is playing. The models will walk through the crowd at a set time and show off the line.
These shows can be a lot of fun.
If you’re in the right place when it starts you'll have a good view. If not you'll be looking around people's heads to get a decent angle of the new styles.
The show will also last 10-20 mins.
When they are done you can usually stick around for a while and mingle while sipping on some adult beverages. Bonus points if the DJ is good as it can really add to the environment.
I was fortunate to go to a show in Cannes a few years back and the DJ made the night memorable.
These are very rare because of the intimacy and the cost to produce for the fashion labels.
They often begin with an open bar serving wine and champagne. Then you're seated at a beautiful dinner table with fascinating people who have similar interests as you.
You'll then watch the 10-20 min show while at your table having a nice pathway to see each model walk down the runway. *
After the show you'll be served a high-quality 3-course (or more) meal enjoying expansive conversations.
AND you'll often get to meet and mingle with the designer and the fashion press as they are at the intimate dinner. But these dinners are a rarity and not easy to find.
* Sometimes these dinners can be in large venues. Depending on the size of the
venue you may not have the feeling of being in the front row. You may get sat at
a table far from the action and you may have a difficult time seeing the models.
For my fashion line, TARA Paris, we prefer to have smaller more intimate dinner party fashion shows.
This way, I’m able to genuinely get to know the people who attend. They enjoy themselves more and we spend time eating, drinking and mingling before and after the show.
Yes, it’s true, this adds expense to the production. But I’m committed to creating an experience that has everyone who attends feeling truly special.
And as an added bonus after the show the guests can even view and touch the latest collection.
Now, this is a fun step…
You get to dream about or do some fashion research on fashion styles and brands you resonate with
You can look at magazines our search the Internet for images of clothing that you would love to see walk down the runway….
OR if you already know the styles you like you can just write out the brands and styles you would love to witness walk down the runway.
Think about the types of clothing you’re drawn to…
What brands are you interested in? Do you like the high-end lines like Chanel and Gucci? Or are you more of a Michael Kors kind of girl?
Maybe you love both and ALL fashion.
Would going to a show where the clothes are really artistic, but not functional be cool to you?
Or would it bother you to see a woman walking the runway with something you could never wear because the outfit has a full body cactus? Wrapped around the model;)
Do you like timeless and elegant brands? Clothing that is chic and stylish?
Remember this is supposed to be fun.
And it’s also very probable that YOU DON’T CARE… You just want to get into a show and enjoy the experience.
I get it. I was there once too. When I was in fashion school in Paris, I just wanted to get into a show. I didn’t care what the brand was.
I was in it for the experience and to say I did it.
Now we are moving on to the most critical part of the process. Now let’s get your ticket…
I’m going to give you an easy way to get into a high-level Parisian fashion show in a minute.
But first, let’s explore some other ways for you to get a ticket to a fashion show.
Do you know anyone who has a fashion line? Any models? Any PR or press in the fashion industry? Maybe you went to college with someone who got a job at a fashion magazine?
If you’re on Linkedin you can even search your contacts by industry. Who knows maybe you know someone from your past that’s now working in fashion.
Now if you do find someone you know in the industry, then you'll want to reach out to them and let them know you are interested in going to a show.
These people do get asked quite a bit for tickets. But it's worth an ask.
If you happen to have a large following on Instagram or Facebook it’s possible PR agencies will get you a free ticket even if you don’t know anyone in the industry.
Fashion designers want to get more exposure for their line.
So pitching the PR agencies and letting them know you have 50k or more targeted followers for a line might just get you a ticket to certain shows.
Now if you don’t know anyone in the industry and you don’t have a large social media following there are 2 more ways you can get a ticket to a fashion show.
Before I do, there’s one more way that the rich and famous use to get into any fashion show they want.
It is more difficult for most people because of the high expense involved.
BUT if you have the money (and are willing to spend it) you can get into almost any show you want.
There are high-end concierge services like The Blue Fish that cater to people with big dreams and desires that are willing to pay a premium.
Full disclosure, these companies are not inexpensive. Often you will have to pay a membership fee of $5-10k a year just to be a member of their services.
Then you would have to pay anywhere from $3k-$20k for a ticket depending on the show. If you want to go to a Chanel show and you don’t have any in’s, then it’s going to be on the higher side.
Steve Sims is the owner of The Blue Fish and he can get you tickets to almost anything you want.
So yes, this is an option but it’s not one that many women are interested in because of the investment required.
And it’s not any type of fashion show. It’s a Dinner Party Fashion show in Paris.
High-end models. High-end fashion (art) that’s elegant and chic. The production of this show is top notch.
I’m holding a TARA Paris “Dinner Party Fashion Show” in Paris on Saturday, March 25th, 2017. You’ll get to come to the fashion capital of the world and see a real fashion show.
